Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 38

Posted on August 8, 2016December 22, 2025 by Journey Waters

August 8th 2016
Yorktown Heights, NY

I was trying to decide what to discuss today as it was a day of helping Arlene move some boxes, then it came to me – via e-mail.

I had sent out some emails looking for support in New Jersey and I’d gotten some nice replies and now have a few people working with me to come up with solutions, but the email I got was an alert that someone had mentioned this blog. When I checked out the ping back, it was from a blog in Virginia. Virginia! I wasn’t even down there yet. A few minutes later I found out that it was my friend, Stephen Messer’s better half that was responsible for the nice article. So I got to thinking. I should do a blog about all the people who’ve written or done stories on my trip so far.

My first interview was out of Vermont. Joanna Tebbs Young did a nice article on me in the Rutland Reader. Link: http://www.rutlandreader.com/paddling-in-search-of-happiness/

The next one happened in Waterford, NY when Channel 13 in Albany did a story on me. I never got to see this one, but the day after it appeared, people began to recognize me on the streets of Waterford where I stayed for a couple of days with a short paddle in between the north end of town and the south.

It was just after I arrived in Cold Spring, NY when New 12 Westchester came out and did an on camera interview with me. This resulted on two different stories.

While I was back in Waterford, NY my old schoolmate, Pete Bardunias wrote a story about me and that appeared in The Express on July 28th a second story appeared in the August issue of Boating on the Hudson http://www.boatingonthehudson.com/flippingbook/2016/aug/#36

Screen Shot 2016-08-06 at 5.40.17 PMI had stopped at the Palisades Boat Club in Yonkers for lunch during one day paddling and there I met JP. He and his girlfriend joined me for lunch and we had a nice chat. It wasn’t until days later that I saw JP had written a nice article about me in his New Jersey Windsurfing and Watersports Association’s newsletter. https://www.dropbox.com/s/1bi30q8z9swgh37/Newsletter%20Summer%202016%20final%20.pdf?dl=0

Screen Shot 2016-08-08 at 7.54.40 PMBefore I made my last paddle in the Hudson River and under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, The Daily Voice and The Yorktown News both interviewed me. The Daily Voice, an online news source, had me on their front page this week: http://yorktown.dailyvoice.com/neighbors/yorktown-native-kayaks-from-lake-champlain-to-key-west/675872/

The Yorktown News article came out today:

and that bring me to the start of this. Seeing the article in the Richmond Virginia Weekly was such a surprise and really made my day. Sure, it was a rough day when I landed on New Jersey, but now I have people rallying up support and I know soon enough I will be able to re-launch and start to enjoy New Jersey and the fine people of this state. I know they are out there and I’m starting to meet them.

As school starts to resume now, I wanted to remind the teachers, faculty and any clubs out there that I am available to come speak to your class, group or school regarding the journey. I think it is an important story for our young kids to hear. Even in this early stage.
