Tool Storage

Posted on May 18, 2019December 22, 2025 by Journey Waters

What do you do when you have 10 gallons of water and a 5 gallon bucket?
Walk Carefully!  In my case, I had a very small space for all my tools and using a trailer was out of the question. I must be completely self contained. So I spent a good week or two laying this all out. Thankfully, I am really good at working with small spaces and maximizing every inch.

My first job was to come up with a plan and see if it could be executed. It took three attempts to get it right. Then it took a month of design as everything I was doing had to be custom engineered and custom made. After everything was made and installed, it was all take out and shipped off off to powder coating. Only after would it be installed permanently.  The tray took the longest to design and it with through about four revisions as all my ideas proved to be too complex to execute on even a generous budget. Even the plywood floor was an issue as it had to be larger than your 4′ x 8′ standard sheets. I managed to find a supplier of 5′ x 10′ sheets near by thankfully and these 450# capacity drawer glides were purchased on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2JX8epN. I attached them to 3″ Angle Iron to make the framework for the tray and then attached 1.5″ angle iron to the inside of the drawer glides to hold the plywood.

One could have easily gone with a pre made slide out floor, but here, inches mattered and those would have raised my floor height an inch and a half too much. In the end, I loved how this came out. Still to come will be additional LED lighting under the bed area and custom boxes for the very top shelf along with custom boxes for the right and left sides of the two main shelves. I’ll also build storage cubbies throughout this area and on the rear doors.
